Association Highlights FEDA Education Foundation Scholarship Programs Growing hirty-three distribution professionals from FEDA member firms will be attending the March 2013 University of Industrial Distribution (UID) program in Indianapolis, thanks to a recordbreaking number of scholarships awarded by the FEDA Education Foundation. The scholarships are valued at $995. To date, 188 FEDA dealers have attended the UID program since 2002. This is a wonderful four-day program that offers more than 30 full-day and half-day courses delivered by the nation's leading distribution consultants and industry experts. Students choose their daily courses based upon their needs and interests, and earn 30 hours (3 CEU credits) toward the Purdue University Certificate in Industrial Distribution as a result of their participation. Scholarship applications for 2014 will be accepted in September of 2013. Earlier this year, the Foundation also began awarding $100 scholarships to assist with certification fees for ServSafe and $200 scholarships to assist with the Certified Foodservice Professional (CFSP) program. To date, we have awarded four scholarships for ServSafe and three for CFSP to dealer personnel. This will be a year-round scholarship program. Education continues to be a top priority of the FEDA membership and the FEDA Education Foundation Board and trustees are proud to support the continuing education and professional development of FEDA distribution professionals. If you have any questions about these three scholarships, contact me at 800-677-9605 or at ray@feda.com. Prompted by the National Recovery Act (NRA), the Food Service Equip8 FEDA New s & View s ment Industry, Inc., (later renamed FEDA) was incorporated in Chicago on July 25, 1933. FEDA's founder, Sam Anoff of the of the Albert Pick & Co., recounts the details in his book the Food Service Equipment Industry….Its Beginning…Its Growth …Its People. According to Sam, it was Henry S. Blum, a Chicago attorney who did considerable work with hotels and restaurants, who notified dealers about the NRA requirements and suggested that they organize as an industry rather than run the risk of having the government assign them arbitrarily to a category that would not be properly representative. And the rest, as they say, is history. Copies of Sam's book pop up for sale occasionally on Amazon.com. If you're fortunate to get a copy, you can read more about FEDA's history—or watch for the July 2013 issue of News & Views. We'll celebrate our history in that issue, which will include old-time photos. If you have a historical photo or short story of what FEDA has meant to you and your dealership, please contact me by January 25. Keep Learning and Growing. Attend FEDA's 80th Annual Convention (See Convention Program Insert Inside) The FEDA Convention will be held April 3-7, 2013, at the new JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa in the beautiful hill country of historic San Antonio.
