the first white men found the Pahgosa (healing waters) that had been used by Native Americans for many generations. The legend tells of a time when a horrible plague came over the tribe. Along the banks of the San Juan, the people prayed and performed ceremonial fire dances until they were exhausted and went to sleep. When they awoke, hot water was bubbling up from under the coals of the burned out fires. Their prayers had been answered, as bathing in and drinking from the healing waters cured their ailments. In the 1860s, a report written by United States Army Physicians stated, The waters of Pagosa are without a doubt the most wonderful and beneficial in medicinal effects that have ever been discovered. After that, the word was out. Pagosa became a township, and the first bath house was built. The hot springs are just one of the attractions that draws the crowds.
