That metaphor is appropriate, given the relationship that Sherry's signature glass— known as a copita, or "little cup"—has to seaward vessels: It earned its nickname, "the dock glass," in the 17th and 18th centuries, as merchants would rely on its tulip shape to help them accurately assess the quality of their purchase after shipments arrived at the docks. Resembling a small white wine glass, the copita proved an adept nosing tool, as its narrow opening helps concentrate aromas. Its virtues were so apparent to the dock- dwellers of yore that the copita was soon relied upon for appraising another liquid altogether: Scotch whisky. Because Scotch had no designated vessel of its own, distillers embraced the copita as a symbol of discernment and touted how the glass showcased the spirit's complexities. Its legacy persisted through the new millennium, directly inspiring the design of the Glencairn whisky glass—an innovation so enthusiastically received that it earned the 2006 Queen's Award for Innovation. Despite its ubiquity at distilleries, competitions, and tastings around the world, millions of glasses are still sold annually. The Glencairn vs. Copita debate persists today—even cropping up on Reddit threads— but as Sherry continues to appeal to new generations of consumers far beyond the confines of historic harbors, it appears the wine's signature glass won't cede its influence anytime soon.
