Oil Reclaiming vs. Oil Re-refining A lthough def initions var y, the general difference between oil reclaiming and oil re- refining is that reclaiming removes solids, water, gas and other impurities extractable by vacuum dehydration and filtration, while re-refining removes both soluble and insoluble impurities and most additives, effectively bringing the used oil back to a pure base stock. It then would need to be readditized. Avoid Additive Leaching Particle contamination in a lubricating or hydraulic system is widely known as one of the most devastating contaminants. One effect of particle contamination that is rarely discussed is additive leaching. Many additives attach to particles and are removed along with the particle by filtration. Use Crackle Test to Detect Water Contamination If an oil is looking cloudy, the problem could be water contamination. e crackle test can generally be relied upon to confirm the presence of water. ML Oil Sampling Strategies When sampling new oil deliveries for testing, one strategy is to pull the sample from just above the drum or tanker compartment bottom — where contamination is most concentrated. A: My company always fosters improvable change and has supported and worked with me on a ll the incredible changes and improvements to our oil analysis and lubrica- tion program. Q: What do you see as some of the more important trends taking place in the lubrica- tion and oil analysis field? A: I have seen more of an open- ness to meaningful training and an exchange of success stories during conferences worldwide as well as an emphasis on obtaining certifications. Q: W hat has made your company decide to put more empha sis on machiner y lubrication? A: It has been my personal ca mpa ign to better our program. During this improve- ment, my upper management has seen firsthand the need for greater emphasis on machinery lubrication and noticed the advantages, cost savings and improvements to our compa- ny's carbon footprint.
