Peathegee I nc/G low I mages OTHER NEWS n Last year, 24 African American, Hispanic American, and Native American professors earned tenure at U.S. business schools, and 46 minority candidates completed their doctorates and became business professors. That's the word from The PhD Project, an organization that recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines. In addition, last year 22 minorities advanced to positions of academic leadership, such as department chair or dean. Further, 362 minorities are currently enrolled in doctoral programs and should take their places at the heads of classrooms over the next few years. Since The PhD Project's inception in 1994, the number of minority business professors has grown from 294 to 1,172. n With the aim of supporting better education in accounting, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited and the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER) have announced the Deloitte IAAER Scholarship Program. They also have named the five associate professors who will serve as the program's inaugural scholars: Nadia Albu of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies in Romania; Konrad Grabinski ´ of the Cracow University of Economics in Poland; Fernando Dal-Ri Murcia of the University of São Paulo in Brazil; Supriyadi of Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia; and Elmar Retief Venter of the University of Pretoria in South Africa. n A US$3.5 million fund at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, has been established to help launch student-led ventures and strengthen the educational component of the university's ESTEEM Graduate Program. Funding was made possible by gifts from John Jeuck, the former dean of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, in honor of his friend Philip J. Purcell III, a member of the Notre Dame Board of Trustees. The ESTEEM (engineering, science, technology and entrepreneurship excellence master's) Program is a multidisciplinary collaboration among the College of Science, the College of Engineering, and the Mendoza College of Business.
