Sadie Wonder Pup, a canine resident of San Jose, nominated Carmel and after much campaigning and lobbying, the votes came fast and furi- ous and Carmel beat out 113 other cities including Annapolis, Maryland, who held a strong lead into the final days of voting. Sadie Wonder Pup was able to procure more than $4,000 in pledges from donors and that money is being given to many animal non-profits both locally and nationally. Way to go Sadie, The Monterey Peninsula is so unique and is home to such a diverse group of residents and travelers alike. and those locally who voted and helped our city win! It is truly an amazingly pet friendly city, with watering holes for dogs scattered up and down Ocean Avenue and the sur- rounding areas, as well as wag-friendly restaurants with doggie menus. Several of Carmel's hotels and Inns are super pet friendly, most notably The Cypress Inn. Speaking of dogs, I recently learned a very hard and expensive lesson—do not give a dog a bone. I have four dogs of various sizes and one day while at the grocery store, I was inspired to buy my dogs a special treat: three large Smokey Ham Bone dog treats. I bought a small synthetic bone treat for the smallest dog. Long story short, these large ham bones are very dangerous and after an overnight stay in the emergency pet hospital, my dog Ozzy was saved from what looked to me to be the end of his life. The bone was stuck inside in huge splintered pieces, he had stopped eat- ing and was completely plugged up. His spunky and happy demeanor had become one of lethargy and listlessness. Dr. Ponder of Romie Lane Pet Hospital in Salinas is an incredible human being and after a 24-hour stay at his hospital, our youngest dog Ozzy was back home and on his way to a full recovery. Big props go out to Dr. Ponder and the staff at Romie Lane Pet Hospital. The Monterey Peninsula is so unique and is home to such a diverse group of residents and travelers alike. We have it all here. For those of us who reside in this slice of paradise, we are very fortunate; for those who travel here, there are many reasons to keep coming back. The economy is getting better, the weather is improving, and I am truly excited to be here. Lastly, thank you for all the good wishes for recovery after my New Year's Eve accident. I am happy to say that I am mending up nicely and, with the help of my doctor and physical therapists, should be walking without a boot or crutches soon. 28 C ARMEL MAGAZINE•SPRING/SUMMER 2013
