SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2013-2014 CATALOG & STUDENT HANDBOOK 3 credits 3 periods AJS165 2.5 credits 2.5 periods Ethics and the Administration of Justice Examination and Comparison of Tire Track Evidence Introduces and explores ethical issues and the justice system. Focuses on ethics and the law, the police, courts and corrections. Reviews ethical theory, concepts and practices as they relate to administration of justice. Encourages critical thinking and value decision making in criminal justice system situations. Prerequisites: None. Overview of proper methods and techniques used in examination, comparison and interpretation of tire track evidence. Discussions of history of tire track evidence, tire manufacturing, terminology, symbols, numbers, tread design and other identifying characteristics. Differences in tire designs and individualizing characteristics, examination and photographic documentation, and enhancement techniques . Practical exercises utilized to teach and critique the skills of the students. Prerequisites: AJS163. AJS155 2 credits 2 periods Concealed Weapons Carry Training in safe handling and use of handguns. Examines legal provisions related to carrying a concealed weapon; legal and moral implications of self-defense. Prerequisites: None. (Pass/Fail grade only.) AJS162 3 credits 3 periods Domestic Violence Explores domestic violence as a social problem within the United States from historical, cultural, political, legal, and law enforcement perspectives. Provides an overview of theories, definitions and causes of, and interventions for domestic violence involving spousal, elder and child abuse along with teen dating violence. Examines the dynamics and effects of domestic violence. Addresses research issues and contemporary domestic violence policy. Prerequisites: None. AJS163 2.5 credits 2.5 periods Documentation, Collection and Preservation of Track Evidence Covers proper methods and techniques of locating, documenting, collecting and preserving footwear/tire tread impression evidence and courtroom presentation and defense of such evidence. Discussion of the history of track evidence, digital imaging resolution and other advanced photographic techniques, evidence enhancement and the interpretation of the relationship between the crime scene and evidence location. Numerous practical exercises utilized and implemented to emphasize and critique the skills of the students to properly perform this level of training in footwear and tire track science. Prerequisites: None. AJS164 2.5 credits 2.5 periods Examination and Comparison of Footwear Evidence Overview of the proper methods and techniques in the examination, comparison, and interpretation of footwear evidence. Presentation of history of footwear evidence, footwear construction, foot anatomy, individualizing characteristics of footwear evidence, mold numbering and advanced photographic manipulation of footwear evidence. Discusses proper techniques and methodologies in the examination, interpretation and comparison process. Practical exercises utilized to teach and critique skills of students. AJS263 2.5 credits Courses AJS123 151 2.5 periods Courtroom Testimony For Track Evidence Provides an overview with proper and effective methods and techniques in courtroom testimony as it relates to footwear and tire track examinations and comparisons. Numerous practical exercises related to public speaking utilized and implemented to emphasize and critique skills of the students to properly perform this level of training. Prerequisites: AJS163, AJS164, and AJS165. AJS170 3 credits 3 periods Fire and Arson Investigation for Law Enforcement An examination of fire and arson investigative techniques, the motives and pathology of the arsonist, and the chemistry of fire. Includes documenting the scene, evidence, eliminating accidental causes, and surveillance. Prerequisites: None. AJS190 3 credits 3 periods Sex Crimes and Non-Conventional Sexual Behaviors Examines evolving sexual mores and acts in the United States. Studies processes and procedures involved in labeling sex or sexrelated acts as criminal and/or non-conventional. Explores impact of sex crimes on victims and responses by the criminal justice system. Prerequisites: None. AJS191 3 credits 3 periods Hate Crimes Explores the causes, incidence rates and forms of hate crimes in the United States and other countries. Studies hate crime laws and the Constitution. Examines the impact of hate crimes on society, culture and the law. Considers societal responses to combat and prevent hate crimes. Prerequisites: None. AJS192 3 credits 3 periods Serial Killers and Mass Murderers The study of serial killers, mass murderers and their victims. Examines the history and frequency of these crimes, profiles the killers and their victims, explores theories of causation, and discusses the problems and techniques of investigation, prosecution, punishment, and prevention.
