Site preparation for the $89.4 million Biosciences Building will begin in summer 2014, and the four-story facility will open for classes by fall 2017. Ian Davison, dean of the College of Science and Technology, says the Biosciences Building will deliver state-of-the-art research and learning spaces and also will house the laboratories, instruments and teaching facilities essential for modern bioscience programs. "As the university has transitioned from a regional university to one of a more national stature, our current facilities for research in the sciences are inadequate," Davison says. "Such a facility is consistent with our aspirations for being a top research institution and will be great for The Biosciences Building will be located between the Engineering and Technology Building and the Education and Human Services Building, replacing the remaining four Washington Court Apartment buildings. The Board of Trustees approved the project after the State of Michigan allocated $30 million in state funding for the building. The remaining funds will come from CMU internal reserves, contributions and proceeds from the issuance of bonds. The facility will emphasize cell and molecular biology, biotechnology and other emerging disciplines that will contribute to the state's economic goals. It also will enhance CMU's strong academic biosciences programs.
