He was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition that set out to survey the American landscape. On the return journey, John explored yellowstone. He was probably the first person of European descent to see the region. 16 JIM BRIDGER (1804–1881) Jim Bridger was a trapper, fur trader, and mountain man. He set out to explore the Yellowstone region in the late 1850s. Jim was well known during his life and afterward as a good storyteller, especially a teller of tall tales.
