WaterSmart Reason No. 3: Your Neighbors Are Doing Their Part Water-Efficient Products Manufacturers are developing innovative products that use less water, growers are propagating lowwater-use plants, and retailers are stocking more water-efficient options for consumers. Low Impact Development Cities and San Diego County are building Green Streets with permeable pavement and vegetated swales that soak up stormwater, restore groundwater and minimize water pollution. Building Codes and Permits The California Green Building Standards Code, enacted in 2011, and local building permits require developers to install water-efficient fixtures and landscapes in new homes and buildings. In a 2022 Water Authority poll of San Diego residents, 88 percent considered efficient water use a civic duty.5 12 Standards and Training in Landscaping Industry The American Society of Landscape Architects launched the Sustainable Sites Initiative, irrigation manufacturers are simplifying what homeowners need to know, and the Irrigation Association and California Landscape Contractors Association are training contractors in new irrigation management techniques. Public Education The Surfrider Foundation, San Diego County Master Gardeners Association, Water Conservation Garden, San Diego Botanic Garden, water districts and others are teaching water-efficient landscaping to homeowners and students. 88%
