6. Prepare Your Soil
Installation
If you have not already done so, test your
soil and mix in compost. REVIEW
7. Shape Berms and Basins
Install berms to slow the flow of
stormwater down a slope and on to the
sidewalk and street. Install basins to
capture runoff from your roof, sidewalk
and street. REVIEW

8. Install Irrigation, a Graywater System and
Rain Barrels
If you are doing this yourself, consider renting a
trencher to make laying pipe easier. Install drip
irrigation after you install plants, unless you
are installing subsurface drip irrigation under a
patch of lawn. REVIEW
9. Buy and Install Plants
Finally, the fun part!
How to Buy
Select symmetrical, well-proportioned
plants with fewer flowers and avoid
plants with yellow or brown leaves
or roots circling around the inside of
the pot. Also, read labels closely and
note that hybrids of a plant vary in
size. Ceanothus gloriosus, for example,
grows to a height of 1-1/2 feet while
Ceanothus 'Concha' reaches six to
seven feet.
