In this Escondido garden,
authenticity, sustainability and
community come together.
San Diego-based Schmidt Design
Group Inc. and its client turned a
stormwater infiltration basin and
salvaged trees and building materials
into a one-acre garden where
restaurant guests can dine or escape
among organically grown herbs,
vegetables and many water-efficient
plants. When it rains, the plants
remove nitrogen and phosphorous,
which cause water pollution, from
the stormwater. The garden is the
recipient of the American Society of
Architects 2009 President's Award
and Sustainable Sites Certificate.
