Ideas Step 2: Mix in Compost It turns out that you and your soil have something in common. You both like organic salads, locally grown fruit and fresh ground coffee. You like it fresh and your soil likes it composted, but you're both foodies! Compost is organic matter. Recycle green waste from your kitchen and garden, or buy ready-to-use compost by the bag or in bulk. Adding it to your soil makes the microorganisms happy. They create tiny clumps of soil particles with open space between them, and your soil becomes a working sponge. The technical term for this is soil aggregation. Compacted and clay soil will loosen and drain better, and sandy soil will hold water and nutrients better. Both improvements will give roots room to grow and reduce stormwater runoff. How to Make It Making compost is best described as making a tossed salad of green material and brown material and spraying it with the hose to activate microbes and start the decomposition process. 86
