How Much You Need
Compost
A rule of thumb is to add 1 to 1.3 cubic yards of compost to every 100 square
feet of soil. Download this free compost or mulch calculator to work out the
math. This will give you enough to spread a three- to four-inch layer of compost
on top of your planting area. Use a shovel or spade to mix it into the top few
inches of soil. Be careful not to disturb plant roots.
Mulch
As with compost, add 1 to 1.3 cubic yards of mulch to every 100 square feet of
soil. Use your hands or a rake to spread an even, three-inch layer. If you have a
large property, call a mulch-blowing service for delivery and installation. Keep
mulch about six inches away from plant stems and tree trunks so they stay
dry. As mulch decomposes and integrates with the soil, add more to maintain
a three-inch layer. Expect to add more every six to 12 months.
