4. Have One Water-Use Level Per Irrigation Zone Ideas Water-efficient plants react to overwatering and underwatering the same way – they lose their foliage and produce fewer flowers until all you see are branches. To avoid this, limit the plants within each irrigation zone to one water-use level. In a mature garden, this may mean removing a high-water-use plant located among moderate-water-use plants. Or it can mean hand watering a new plant surrounded by mature plants to give it the additional water needed to get established. If you are designing a new garden, create separate irrigation zones for highwater-use plants such as cool-season turf, moderate-water-use plants such as shade and fruit trees, and low-water-use plants such as succulents. Note the maximum number of zones allowed by your controller (usually 12-15) when making your plans. 95
