4. Have One Water-Use Level Per Irrigation Zone
Ideas
Water-efficient plants react to overwatering and underwatering the same way –
they lose their foliage and produce fewer flowers until all you see are branches.
To avoid this, limit the plants within each irrigation zone to one water-use level.
In a mature garden, this may mean removing a high-water-use plant located
among moderate-water-use plants. Or it can mean hand watering a new
plant surrounded by mature plants to give it the additional water needed to
get established.
If you are designing a new garden, create separate irrigation zones for highwater-use plants such as cool-season turf, moderate-water-use plants such as
shade and fruit trees, and low-water-use plants such as succulents. Note the
maximum number of zones allowed by your controller (usually 12-15) when
making your plans.
