KEITH RICHARDS,
"PATIENCE PLEASE," 1972.
"I was quiet and reserved back
then," Russell says. "At a photo
shoot, I would never tell anyone
what to do, it's not in my
nature….that used to drive Pete
Townshend nuts. [He'd say,] "Tell us
what to do!" This photo of Keith
Richards is an exception to that. I
shot this during the Stones' 1972
tour at customs in a US airport,
returning from Vancouver. I saw this
poster, called Keith over and asked
him to stand there. Took two shots,
one was terrible, this one was cool. I
was just bringing Mick Jagger over to
get them together, but the customs
guy said, 'Stop shooting or I'll confiscate your film.'" The San Francisco
Chronicle called this image "One of
the great rock photos of all time."
