search on Women and Gender and the National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, has significantly advanced the field of maternal health by providing empirical evidence of low-cost alternatives to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage. She received her Distinguished Researcher Award in the clinical sciences category. Du's research has made significant contributions to furthering knowledge about the biology of platelets and coagulation, which in turn has important implications for a variety of common diseases. She received recognition in the basic life sciences category. The pair were among five such awardees who received recognition during a Feb. 20 ceremony that included a $5,000 cash prize and a commemorative award. MCDONALD RECEIVES ACMQ FOUNDERS AWARD Timothy McDonald, MD, JD, has been named as the 2013 ACMQ Founders Award winner from the American College of Medical Quality Board of Trustees. A professor and pediatric anesthesiologist, McDonald serves as chief safety and risk officer for health affairs for the University of Illinois. After completing his MD at Indiana University, McDonald undertook residencies in pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital and in anesthesiology at Brigham and Timothy McDonald Women's Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology/critical care at Boston Children's Hospital. The award is given in the name of the ACMQ's founders, to perpetuate the memory of their work, and it recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of medical quality management or clinical quality improvement in the areas of scholarship, ideas or the promotion of the specialty. PRABHAKAR BECOMES ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH Bellur Prabhakar, PhD, is the associate dean for research at the college, where he will work with Larry Tobacman, MD, senior associate dean for research, in advancing multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research and research funding. Prabhakar has decided to step down from his position as head of the department of microbiology and immunology after 16 years, once a replacement has been named. He has been funded by the NIH continuously for the past 20 years, holds several patents and has nearly 200 publications to his credit in journals including Science, Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, PNAS and the Journal of Clinical Investigation. As department head, Prabhakar recruited 13 faculty members noteworthy for both their diversity, and their Bellur Prabhakar across-the-board research success; over the last 15 years, the department has increased its extramural research funding more than fivefold. Prabhakar has worked closely with the department of undergraduate medical education to continually reform the medical school's M1 and M2 curriculum, and he has contributed actively to the recent curriculum reform that streamlined teaching across all four campuses of the College of Medicine. At the national level, Prabhakar has participated in meetings with various program leaders, including the directors of the NIH and NSF, and members of both houses of Congress who serve on important NIH appropriation committees. HASNAIN HONORED WITH UIC HEALTH POLICY AWARD Memoona Hasnain, MD, MHPE, PhD '01, has received the Health Policy and Administration Achievement Award from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The award, granted to alumni for their significant achievements in life, was granted at the school's 40th anniversary Memoona Hasnain gala, held April 13 at The Field Museum in Chicago. An associate professor of public health and research director for the department of family medicine, and director of the Patient-Centered Medicine Scholars Program, Hasnain attended medical school at Dow Medical College, University of Karachi, Pakistan, before receiving her Master of Health Professions Education and PhD in public health sciences from UIC. She receives research funding from the NIH and the federal Health Resources and Services Administration as well as several state and private agencies. MALIK GRANTED SHOCK SOCIETY SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Asrar B. Malik, PhD, has received the SHOCK Society's Scientific Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of trauma, shock and sepsis. In Malik's case, the award recognizes his work on endothelial permeability and a commitment to furthering knowledge in inflammation and organ injury. Professor and head of pharmacology at the College of Medicine since 1995, Malik has received 35 continuous years of NIH funding and is principal investigator of multiple R01 and Program Project grants. After receiving his PhD from the University of Toronto, Malik was at the Research Institute of The Hospital for Sick Children, Albany Asrar B. Malik Medical College of Union University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, prior to joining the COM. Previous awards include the Research Career Development Award and MERIT awards from the NIH, and the Research Achievement Award from the American Thoracic Society. MIELER NAMED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF ARVO William F. Mieler, MD, professor and vice chairman of the department of ophthalmology & visual sciences, has become president-elect of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and will serve William F. Mieler the 2014-15 term. Program director and vitreoretinal fellowship director at the College of Medicine in Chicago, Mieler has been a principal investigator or collaborator on 10 National Eye Institute-funded trials and has participated in more than 50 collaborative clinical trials. He and his collaborators have presented in excess of 125 abstracts at the ARVO Annual Meeting over the past 20 years, and Mieler has served on the ARVO Retina Program Planning Committee. The largest eye and vision research organization in the world, ARVO's members include more than 12,000 researchers from more than 70 countries. The association encourages and assists research, training, publication and dissemination of knowledge in vision and ophthalmology. illinois medicine | 9
