PRESIDENT'S COLUMN By Bob Wayman 'It's not just the cars, it's the people". This famous PCA slogan has rung true for the entire 54 year history of KCRPCA. As further proof of this, I am very pleased to announce that Board member Stan Thorne has stepped up to fill the (very large) shoes of departing Der Sportwagen editor David Lessmann. Stan is a creative type guy who will do a fantastic job taking over the great legacy that David and those that came before him left in our club newsletter. David and Stan will be working together for a few issues to insure a smooth transition. In other newsletter "news", your Board has approved to move the newsletter to an electronic format only starting in 2014. This will It really is true, "It's not just the cars, it's the people." 2013 has been a very up year. Our membership has grown 10.5% since December 2012 to 443 primary members. Along with the well-attended "standard" events like the Open House (April), BBQ (June) and Shrimp Boil (September), Social Director Holly Juckette served up a fantastic new event, Retreat to the Elms (May) that will be become a staple activity for us for years to come. Our weekly Saturday morning breakfasts (a 30+ year tradition) are better attended than ever filling the loft at Le Peep almost every week. Our Club Race at the Kansas Speedway was the very first road racing event held at that venue and coupled with the Taste of Speed event organized by Get your garage queen out of the dark and join in an autocross, or start your weekend off early by attending a Saturday morning breakfast. allow us to deliver a better quality product, directly to members and significantly reduce the club's largest single expense. Stay tuned for more details and instructions on how to obtain a printed copy if you so desire. It seems wild that it is time to write the first column of the year again so soon. I don't know about you, but for me 2013 has been an extraordinary year with some pretty significant ups and downs in the course of living life. Fortunately for our club, 6 board members Murray Steeble and Tim Bubniak, we estimate that more than 150 KCRPCA members and friends enjoyed a Porsche related activity on that sunny June weekend. KCRPCA members showed up en masse for the Oktoberfest German Car Show (this year held in September due to the Chiefs schedule) with our 33 Porsches representing the largest single marque group at the show. Our autocross program was a huge success, with a record number of participants and lots of folks getting acquainted with the capability of their Porsches for the very first time in a safe controlled environment. Our Autocross Chair, Rudy Rodriguez, is busy working on a more exciting and plentiful 2014 season at this very moment. If you know Rudy, you know that his enthusiasm and energy is contagious so I expect nothing but more fun than ever for everyone this coming year. Moving to a new venue for the Holiday Party, we had more than 70 attendees, the most ever for this event, at the beautiful Hotel Sorella on the Country Club Plaza. I am writing all of this to be sure you know that we had a GREAT time in 2013 and if you weren't involved, you missed out meeting some fantastic new friends and a bunch of fun. Make plans to attend more events in 2014, volunteer your ideas for a new event, get your garage queen out of the dark and join in an autocross, or start your weekend off early by attending a Saturday morning breakfast. You have my guarantee that you will get more out of joining in than you have to put in. As the saying goes, just do it!! It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your president this year and I look forward with great anticipation to a fantastic year.
