"Dogs never talk about themselves, but listen to you while you talk about yourself and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation. " ~ Jerome K. Jerome Two-year-old Lhasa Apso Coco Chanel spends her days at The Lemon Tree in Carmel Valley. Despite her diminutive stature, Coco is quite a control freak. "She's nice to everyone, people and dogs, small and large," says owner Jane Brinton, "but she definitely wants to be in charge." Open since July 2013, The Lemon Tree is an intimate, indoor/outdoor shop offering items for the patio, home and garden plus an array of gift selections. "We call this a village within Carmel Valley Village," Brinton says. And cute-as-a-button Coco is most definitely the mayor of that little village. Both are rescue dogs who bring a certain attitude to the studio. At 11, German Shepherd Sam epitomizes cool, while Tinkerbell, a rambunctious 6-year-old Jack Russell Wire Terrier, brings on the wild side with her, ahem, unusual hairdo. "Tink rocks that pink Mohawk," says King. "She and Sam are Mutt and Jeff, the Gruesome Twosome!" 080 Working Dogs_086 Working Dogs 1/24/14 6:03 AM Page 1
