Whether you're looking to spot a Willow Flycatcher, a Palm Warbler, a Red- Necked or Wilson's Phalarope, or the more common egret, hawk or just plain old ducks, this is the place. It's also the place to go for whale watching. Several operations provide tours, including Sanctuary Cruises, owned by Captain Mike Sack and marine biologist Dorris Welch. This team has owned the business since 2011 and pro- vides personalized, intimate up-close encoun- ters with grey, humpback and blue whales, plus dolphins, orcas and whatever other surprises Mother Nature puts in the path of their com- fortable 43-foot vessel, the "Sanctuary." Moss Landing is easy to find. You can't miss it: just look for the twin smokestacks at the inter- section of Highway 1 and Dolan Road. "It's an easy drive from everywhere around the Bay," says Yohn Gideon. "It's a nice, quiet place. There's romance, relaxation and outdoor recreation. It's great for a 'staycation.'" And, referring to the well-stocked veggie stand on Highway 1: "Where else can you get five avocados for a buck?" he asks. Everyone in Moss Landing knows Ray Retez. He's done as much as anyone to put this place on the map. He's proud of his little village. "I love it," he says. "I get to meet people from all over the world.
