March / April 2014 18 SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT EDITOR By Chuck Vossler Headlining the 2014 Detroit Auto Porsche stand was the world debut of the all new Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S. The Targa bridges the gap, I bet you didn't know needed filled, between the 911 coupe and 911 convertible. Porsche installed a retro brushed metal B pillar that harkens back to the 70's version of the 911 Targa and added a very unique wrap around back glass. Gone is the all glass roof of the last gen Targa and in it's place a slick stowing a cloth top. Porsche focused heavily on the Targa's all wheel drive, all weather performance. With the Targa 4 and Targa 4S, Porsche now has their 15th and 16th versions of the 911 Model. The 911 range lends well to an extremely customizable iconic sports car for whatever the owners desire. The Targa 4 has a distinctly different look and feel with the short cloth top that stows with a touch of a button. I watched as Hurley Haywood gave an interview in a Targa opening and closing the top repeatedly to let the interviewer get just the right shot. The 3.4 L Targa puts out 350hp and the 3.8L Targa S puts out 400 hp both are available with a seven- speed manual or a PDK. The MSRP is $102,595 for the Targa 4 and $117,195 for the Targa 4S.
