May / June 2014 4 Being a kid at heart is important. I'm reminded of that every time I see the toothy grin of either of my two little girls. The way they look at the world with wonder and amazement is something special. It is easy as an adult to get stuck in a rut. Work-dinner- laundry, work-dinner-mow is a pattern we can all easily fall into. But kids... kids ask the magical question "Why not?" A question to which we as adults probably too often say, "because." There is always a because that stops us from doing what was fun as a kid. I can't have the window down while driving, because it will muss my hair. I can't walk barefoot in the grass, beause my feet might get wet. Tonight my girls asked a question to which the kid in me had to say "Why not!" We had finished dinner and homework was almost done. McKenna then asked me, "Daddy when we finish homework can we go go- karting?" Now, I'd expect that type of question to come from a rough and tough little boy. To hear it come from my little girl brought both joy ... and "because" to me. I wanted to answer no. No because we need to take a bath. No because we need to read. No because we need to.... My head was listing a hundred reason why we shouldn't, but my inner kid spoke first "Why not!" Thirty minutes later we were at the local go- kart track. McKenna has driven before, but this was Kendall's first solo drive. To put it short, she was nervous. Probably the same jitters the first time you got behind the wheel of a car. I explained a few things about the karts to her, and then with a deep breath she said, "Dad you can stop now. I can do it." So as proud as any father can be, I headed with my two little girls to the staging area. We strapped in and took off. I was chearing them on with waves and thumbs-ups. So as proud as an editor can be of his region, can I stop now? Can you do it? Can you say 'why not' and come out to the next KCRPCA event? The Elms fun run is just around the corner.
