May / June 2014 6 Finally, it is officially spring in the Midwest. Yesterday as we were driving back from a track event in Council Bluffs, Iowa, my grandson and I were treated to spectacular clouds, rain as hard as I have ever seen and wind gusts that moved my 7000 pound truck and 5000 pound trailer from one lane to the next. 20 hours before it had been 80 degrees with not a cloud in the sky. As the saying goes, if you don't like the weather in Kansas (or Missouri or Iowa), just wait a bit….. I have had the pleasure of driving a number of Porsches over the past month. First, I had a chance to drive my 1982 930 on two race tracks, something that just defies my ability to write about it. There is just something about that car that "does it" for me. I also had a chance to take a spin in a nice 1986 911 Cabriolet as well, a very fine car and although down on the power scale significantly from the 930, a very nice driving experience. I will be taking this car on an 80's road trip later in the year. Lastly, a good friend is on the hunt for her first Porsche which means I get to go car shopping! We have driven a 2013 911 C4S and a 2008 911 GTS and she took a turn in my 2004 996 tt X50 as well. More than 30 years span the lifespan of these cars, yet it is clear from driving them in such a short a time space that the family lines run deep in rear engine Porsches. The raw 930 gives a hint of what is to come in the semi sophisticated X50 20 years down the road and the new 991 is so refined, and beautiful inside (I am learning about style from my friend) that one might think it is a different sort of car until you get in and drive it. The newer cars are quieter and more refined but when they are clipping an apex on an exit ramp or taking to the twisty roads north of town the bloodlines are readily discernible. Porsche has done what no other car maker can lay claim to, a commitment to steady evolutionary progress on a platform introduced in 1964. A technical and spiritual achievement executed in a way that should be the model for all industrial efforts. The better weather means the beginning of the "social" season for KCRPCA. The line of cars on the street at the Open House was quite a sight (if you want to really impress your neighbors, have an event at your house) and a good time was had by all that attended. One autocross has already been held with our unique "Ladies Only" autocross scheduled for May 18 at Ameristar Casino. I really encourage all KCRPCA ladies to come out and participate in this fun, no pressure casual event. You will love it. Get those keys and come out! We will be publishing details about our fun run to the Elms (May 16) soon so get the space reserved on your schedule now. Also, our Club Race will be held at Heartland Park Topeka June 28/29 so be sure to make plans to come out and see the races! I hope you have noticed the changes in our website. Webmaster Jim Cummings has presided over a revamp of the whole site making it easier to navigate and more content intensive. I expect a Porsche style improvement process will make the website better each time you visit there. Please let us know what you think and let us know if you have ideas for content. We aim to please. IMPORTANT INFO FOR MINORS FOR: If you plan to have a minor accompany you on any "moving car" events (such as a fun drive or parade laps) where the minor will be riding in a car in the event you MUST have a PCA minor form signed by BOTH parents (even if one of the parents is non-custodial) for the minor to participate in the event. You can fill out a form for the entire year and turn it in to me and we will keep it on file so it is not necessary to have a new form for every event. Drop me a line and I will send you the form if you would like one. Only one parent is required to sign the waiver if the minor is only spectating (not riding in a moving vehicle). Don't get caught not being able to take your minor with you at an event. - bob PRESIDENT'S COLUMN By Bob Wayman Racing, Shrimp Boil, and Ladies Autocross, It's going to be a great year!
