SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL John Lithgow Takes the Stage at Sunset Center A cclaimed stage and screen actor John Lithgow brings his storytelling skills to the Sunset Center, presenting "Stories By Heart" on Thursday, May 8, at 8pm. The one- man theatrical memoir explores the influences and individuals that shaped his work as a Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe performer. Lithgow, the son of an actress mother and a director-producer father, shares memories and inspiring tales throughout the production. He also presents two stories shared by family members during his own childhood. "Haircut" is a dark come- dy set in small-town Michigan. "Uncle Fred Flits By" sees the actor portray- ing 10 characters as a young Englishman joins his spirited uncle on a suburban London adventure. The performance comes as Lithgow continues presenting mem- orable on-screen performances. He stars with Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in the for thcoming science fiction release "Interstellar" and with Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank in "The Homesman," also in post- production. He also appeared in the final season of "How I Met Your Mother" and was the voice of the White Rabbit in recent episodes of ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." Tickets for Lithgow's May 8 performance are $79-99 and are available at www.sunsetcenter.org or 831/620-2048, or by visiting the Sunset Center box office on San Carlos and 9th Ave. Carmel-by-the-Sea is surrounded by some of Central California's richest agricultural fields and fishing waters. The City's farmers' market, which takes place on Thursdays from 10am-2pm, is gearing up for its summer season and all the local bounty that brings. Since its launch, the market has become a favorite of residents shopping for fresh fruits and vegeta- bles, local meat and seafood, flowers, cheeses, snacks and other treats. The event also includes chef walks, cooking demos and the work of local craftspeople. The certified organic Carmel-by- the-Sea Farmers' Market takes place in the Sunset Center parking lot at Mission St. and 8th Ave. Details are available at www.westcoastfarmers- markets.org. When First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to China in March, she was accompanied by a profes- sor from the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS). Translation and Interpretation Professor Laura Burian served as Obama's official interpreter on the tour, which included stops at Peking University, the US Embassy, the Great Wall of China and the Chengdu No. 7 High School. The First Lady, her daughters, and their travel team also visited the Forbidden City and Terra Cotta Warriors. Burian, who has worked with the US Depar tments of State, Energy, and Commerce and the US Embassy in Beijing, has also translated for former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Barney Frank, Alan Simpson and David Axelrod will join other nationally known writers, thinkers and political experts headlining the 2014 Leon Panetta Lecture Series. This year's events, which opened in March, spotlight the 100th anniversary of World War I and explore lessons learned since then.
