Carmel Bach Festival's Many Facets I n July, when summer sun warms much of California, Carmel often stays shrouded in fog. Those churning clouds and moody skies make a fitting backdrop for the famed Carmel Bach Festival. "It's almost mystical," says Nicola Reilly, festival spokesperson. "And you can duck into a beautiful old church or an incredible concert hall and spend time listening to music performed by internationally renowned musicians. It's a magical experience." This year's festival, held July 19-August 2, spotlights the ties between Johann Sebastian Bach and Italian music through main stage performances, small-venue recitals, youth chorus shows and educational events. An open- ing night concert features a commissioned piece by 30-year old Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw. Emmy-winner John Wineglass presents two free lectures about the use of Bach's music in classic film. The Virginia Best Adams Vocal Master Class, a month-long residency for Baroque singers, also marks 30 years with sessions at Carmel Presbyterian Church. The new festival location joins popular venues such as the Sunset Center, Carmel Mission Basilica and All Saints' Episcopal Church. Leading up to this year's Carmel Bach Festival, organizers reached out to new audiences with social gatherings like the Bach on the Rocks event held in March. Festival musicians also work with members of Youth Orchestra Salinas and at-risk students at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, among others, and the event has its own youth chorus that celebrates 10 years during this year's July festivities. "This is the 77th year of the festival, so it's a festival that's very much steeped in tradition. But we're also addressing current trends and current issues," says Reilly. "We've also made sure there is an accessible entrance point for everyone." Some Carmel Bach Festival rehearsals are free and open to the public, and ticketed events range from $15 to $85 (with discounts available for students, families and members of the military).
