KATHY ANDERSON Following the Flowers By Emily Van Cleve the flowers. Keeping abreast of what flowers grow at certain times of the year, she shares their delicate beauty through her award-winning garden, still life, and landscape paintings. Living and working in Connecticut, Anderson finds an abundance of breathtaking flowers close to home, but has a particular fondness for the pansy. “I plant new pansies every year in my garden,” she says. “I W 42 ART of the WEST • May/June 2011 hen it comes to deciding what to paint, oil painter Kathy Anderson follows never get tired of painting them.” Anderson has a spacious garden around the home she shares with her husband John, who makes gold leaf, hand-carved frames for her paintings, photographs her work, and helps to maintain her web- site. As she plants that garden, her thoughts are on future paintings and what she wants to depict in them. “I always change the annual flow- ers and shrubs,” she says. “I think about what I want to paint before I plant the garden every year.” While Anderson’s garden supplies an ample amount of subject mate- rial, it is one of several places that inspire her work. A farm with gor- geous gardens, located 30 minutes from her house, is one of her special haunts. “I’m constantly seeking out Poppies and White Peonies, oil, 20˝ by 24˝ “Every year I paint several poppy paintings from life in May, when my huge poppy garden is blooming. My peonies growing with them are pink, but sometimes I decide to make them white for the effect I want.”
