Developing GreatnessThree NCAA Runner-Ups Last 5 YearsSuSan KinG Steffen Nerdal SuSan KinG Steffen Nerdal Three times in the last five seasons, the Tiger track and field team has produced an athlete who became an NCAA runner-up in an event. To the credit of head coach Kevin Robinson, whose prowess as a throwing coach is known far and wide, all three runner-ups were throwers. Steffen Nerdal left Memphis as arguably the most decorated athlete in school history, with four All-America honors to his credit. Two of those came in the indoor weight throw, an event in which Nerdal was twice the runner-up (2009, 2010). Nerdal’s 2010 performance was the closest Memphis has come to having a National Champion during Robinson’s tenure as head coach, with Nerdal’s 23.22 meter throw (76-02.25) putting him just over a foot behind the eventual champion. Steffen Nerdal Susan King was the other Memphis athlete who has earned a runner-up title at the NCAA Championships, when she finished second in the shot put at the 2008 Outdoor Championships, the highest finish in school history for a female track and field athlete at the U of M. - 3 - SuSan KinG
