July / August 2014 6 "My crack dealer called" was the greeting I got at breakfast last week. "Really? You're needing another fix already?" was my response. "Ya... but, he said this time he had something special for me" came the reply. I could see it in his eyes, it was already a done deal. There should be a support group for women whoes men have a Porsche habit. I'd call the group WISOMPH. Their mens' habit starts simply enough with a fascination of cars and horsepower. A subscription to Excellence, given as an unassuming Christmas or birthday gift, soon leads you down a long slippery slope. A slope that eventually leads to your first real need, your first Porsche. The dominos start to fall then. Unknowingly you then receive in the mail a "free" subscription to Panorama. There is nothing "free" about it, because it does nothing but add fuel to the fire. You are introduced to the underworld of aftermarket parts. All with wild promises of increasing your... well, lets just say you are told more is better. Some of us have it worse than others. For a few the case is mild. Nothing one car and a subscription to Excellence or Panorama can't cure. Others, others have it bad. It is an insatiable urge to experience something new. If 3.2 liters is fun surely 3.8 is better. Free flowing exhaust does not give me the push I want, I need a turbo. It can come in many forms. Some want to be out- there exposed to the world. They have the cabriolet or Boxster strain. Others have the track strain, destined to chase their passion round and round. I'm sympathetic to those with concours. A fastideos curse involving toothbrushes, polishing, and waxing their neither regions. Me? I'm a lucky one. I have a woman who understands and supports my Porsche habit. She nods in appreciation as I go on about tales of the 908 and Porsche dominance in the Can-Am series with 1200 hp powered monster cars and Le Mans. Don't get me started on the 917s and Derick Bell. Whow...back off the horse powered tantrum. My wife should be the president of WISOMPH. She understands I have a passion for Porsche. It's what makes me, me. She even goes as far as participating with me at autocrosses and driver education events. And you know what? We have met some of the neatest people. All of them with some form of Porsche-itus, supported by the strong women of WISOMPH. - Stan EDITOR'S COLUMN By Stan Thorne Women In Support of Men's Porsche Habit WISOMPH Women In Support Of Men's Porshe Habits
