July / August 2014 8 I spent a few days at the lake over last past week, working with some neighbors on some overdue homeowners association projects. It was beautiful out with days about 80 degrees and night time temperatures in the mid 60's. While working on the dock one of the neighbors told me that it is not summer until nighttime temps in the 60's are done. This morning in Lenexa it was 76 degrees at 6:23 AM. Summer has arrived. We have had a good start to the warm season this year with record attendance at autocrosses (really why haven't YOU done one of these?), and just this week at least 80 Porsches at our major sponsor's car show at Aristocrat Motors and the week before more than 300 folks turned up at the Macan launch party! The Ice Cream Social at the Rand's will be history by the time you read this and we will all be looking forward to our BBQ at Pit Master Chuck Vossler's on July 19. And we are pleased to announce a new summer event, an open house at member Phil Farruggia's beautiful home in Edgerton on Saturday August 9. This event will be a "do not miss" for Phil owns the garage of every members' dreams, something for everyone to see I guarantee. Stay tuned to our website for details as they get firmed up. As for me, so far this year I have done track events at Circuit of the Americas, Mid America Motorplex, Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Heartland Park Topeka and am leaving for Hallett this Friday. I am looking forward to trips to Road America, High Plains Raceway, Kansas Speedway and two more trips to Hallett this year. Many of you know that my 9 year old grandson, Aaron the Track Rat, accompanies me to many of these events. I mention this to encourage you to be sure to include the next generation in on your Porsche activities. Almost all of our summer events are kid friendly and there is no better way to be sure our club stays robust than to get the younger folks involved. My time traveling to and being at the track with both son and grandson have enriched my track experience to no end and is providing memories for all of us that will be treasured for our entire lives. Kids love to be involved, don't miss the chance, it is fleeting. I went and retrieved my 930, The Pumpkin, from the trailer and took it to the Aristocrat Car Show last weekend. Member Margaret Edwards was there with her daughter and grand kids. Margaret's grandson, CJ (age 5), had attended the open house at my house in April and has taken to calling me "Porsche Bob'. I had the deck lid open on the Pumpkin and CJ was looking under there with great interest. 'Is that the motor" he asked. "Yep it sure is" I told him. He looked again at the 3.3 liter turbo resting there and then with a very serious look said "Where do you put the suitcases?" They go up front I explained, but he didn't buy it, "show me" he demanded. So I took him to the front of the car and opened the trunk. .He gazed intently at the space which is mostly taken up with chassis stiffening x braces and shock tower struts thought for a minute and said "well, they will have to be pretty small suitcases!". Amen, brother. - bob PRESIDENT'S COLUMN By Bob Wayman Small Trunks and Large Garages SUMMER IS HERE
