Individually and collectively, the 2013-14 academic year was among the best ever for our student-athletes at The University of Akron. From winning the Reese Trophy as the top overall men's athletics program in the Mid-Amer- ican Conference for the first time, to Shawn Barber and Annika Roloff each capturing national championships in the pole vault (our fourth and fifth individual NCAA titles in school history), we experienced competitive success at the highest level. In the following pages you can read about those achievements, as well as the conference titles earned this year by Women's Basketball, Rifle, Men's Soccer, Women's Swimming and Diving, and Men's Indoor Track and Field. With these triumphs, sadly we also experienced tragedy. Assistant Football Coach Alan "Tank" Arrington left our lives far too soon, yet he made an indelible impact on the student-athletes, coaches and staff whose lives he brightened with every interac- tion. Our hearts always go out to his wife, Gail, and the entire Arrington family. We also continue to root for retiring Men's Basketball Director of Operations Dan Peters, whose ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer since his December diagno- sis inspires us still. The entire University community is here for #4PetesSake. We often talk about the value of intercollegiate athletics, and among the many ben- efits of participating are the valuable life lessons we learn. To say the least, these dif- ficult circumstances certainly tested our Zips family. We rallied together like a team. Of all of our many accomplishments in 2013-14, I am most proud of that. Indeed, in the year when we released our strategic vision titled IMPACT 2020, there were so many people and moments that made a memorable impact on all of us. We hope you'll enjoy reliving many of them here. Go Zips!
