1. The End of the Information Age: The dawn of the Internet allowed ordinary users to be privy to an incredible amount of data and intelligence that was never publicly (and certainly not instantaneously) available before. While the data and intelligence available today towers over that of just a few years back, the Information Age is over, as we're all drowning in information. Google's chair- man, Eric Schmidt reported that the amount of information that was created by human beings from the beginning of time until 2003 is now matched every 48 hours. i That staggering fact should give an indication that it's harder than ever to stand out among your competitors to your target market. Gone is the novel delight upon hearing the familiar AOL voice say, "You've got mail!" People are simply relieved when they've navigated through all of their mail, knowing the moment won't last. Marketing that works in today's world is much different from the interruption marketing of the past. Marketing that works in today's world has to follow certain rules of permis- sion, deliver value and be useful. 2. Social Media is Here to Stay: • Approximately 75% of all Internet users are members of at least one social network • Social media marketing budgets are projected to double in the next five years ii • The fastest growing demographic on Twitter is 55-64 year olds, up 79% since 2012 • The 45-54 year old demographic is the fastest growing group on both Facebook and Google+ iii • Facebook users spend 6.35 hours each month on the social network via a desktop iv • Facebook is the most downloaded and installed mobile app for both iOS and Android v • U.S. Social Media Ad revenues are expected to reach $11 billion by 2017 vi Can a business survive without social media? This is similar to asking, "Can I drive over the speed limit and not get caught?" The answer is that you can, but it certainly is not in your best interests. Make no mistake, businesses bypassing the use of social media will see diminished returns in the coming months and years. It's inevitable, since this is how people are communicating en masse, and the trend only shows adoption increasing. T H E C H A L L E N G E S ProformaSocial.com
