EIGHT
PLAYERS EARNED A GOAL OR ASSIST IN a 4-3 victory over no. 23 DRAKE IN 2009.
Memphis raced to a 4-1 lead using their offensive firepower against the No. 23 Drake Bulldogs at the 2009 UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in Birmingham on Sept. 13. Drake would use two late goals to close the deficit to 4-3, but the Tigers ultimately got the victory over their ranked foes from Des Moines, Iowa.
In the game the U of M’s goals and assists came from eight different players, seven of which were either freshmen or sophomores.
The upset of Drake proved to be the sixth upset over a ranked opponent during the Richie Grant era of Memphis men’s soccer (1999-10). In 2008, Memphis upset No. 15 SMU to pick up their first victory in the program’s history over their Conference USA rival.
