The 2004 men’s soccer team that brought the program its first Conference USA title was an especially talented, likable team. Four Tigers from that team (Dayton O’Brien, Andy Metcalf, Michael Coburn and Daniel Dobson) would go on to professional careers after their time at the U of M was over. After a loss to then 10th-ranked South Florida, the Tigers would not suffer another loss until the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to the Buckeyes of Ohio State. That string included three wins over ranked foes, including a 3-2, come-from-behind victory against UAB in the conference championship game. The Tigers earned most of the conference awards that season, with Richie Grant picking up his second C-USA Coach of the Year honor. O’Brien was named Offensive Player of the Year, while keeper Sebastian Vecchio earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. In all, seven Tigers (O’Brien, Vecchio, Metcalf, Dobson, Justin Dyer, Gary Connolly and John Reilly) were named to one of three all-conference squads. Adam Montgomery was also named to the all-freshman team. CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS 2010 Memphis Men’s Soccer Experience 51
