memphis upset no. 15 smu 2-1 at the miKe rose soccer complex in 2008. THE GAME WAS TELEVISED LIVE ON CBS COLLEGE SPORTS.
The Tigers have played the role of spoiler twice in the last two seasons after picking up upset victories over No. 15 SMU in a double overtime thriller in 2008 and a victory over No. 23 Drake at the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in 2009. Richie Grant’s squads have defeated six ranked opponents in his 11 years at the helm.
Grant’s 2004 squad defeated archrival UAB twice: a regular season upset of the then-No. 17 Blazers 2-0 and a Conference USA Championship-clinching 3-2 win that sent the Tigers on to the NCAA Tournament.
In 2010, the Tigers will have more opportunities to be the foil of a ranked foe, with Tulsa returning seven starters from a team that finished last season ranked seventh in the country. Missouri State, Charlotte and C-USA foe Kentucky also spent time in the top-25 last season.
