new orleans bowl 2003 Th e nation’s longest bowl drought of 32 years ended in a big way for the University of Memphis. Th e Tigers, which had not participated in a bowl game since 1971, received a bid to the 2003 New Orleans Bowl to face Sun Belt Conference champion North Texas aſt er a stellar 8-4 season. Th e Tigers jumped to a 17-3 lead in the fi rst half and went on to win 27-17 over the Mean Green to improve to 3-0 in bowl games . Memphis quarterback Danny Wimprine was named the MVP aſt er throwing for 254 yards with one touchdown and rushing seven yards for another score. With Memphis’ top tailback, DeAngelo Williams, sidelined with an injury, the Tigers turned to LaKendus Cole who received the game ball aſt er rushing for 62 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. Memphis completed the 2003 season with a record of 9-4, marking the best fi nish by a Tiger team since the 1963 season.
