The workshop used a series of fun and relevant group exercises to demonstrate some powerful project management tools such as stakeholder analysis, project charters, work breakdown structures and critical path analysis. In addition to building their project management skills, the team enjoyed getting to know more about each other on both a personal and professional level through group exercises and classroom discussions. One participant later described the experience as being "like a kid in a candy store" learning how to use the right tools to better plan out projects so problems can either be avoided completely or dealt with while they are still inconveniences rather than emergencies. In the changing world of healthcare management, C M C S i s r e q u i r e d t o implement changes frequently. Just imagine how having good project management skills will support the implementation of ICD-10 coding, for example. According to Dr. Padfield, "Many companies assume anyone who excels as a subject matter expert in their field will automatically be a good project manager even if they don't have any training or experience in project management – this just sets people up for frustration at best and failure at worst." CMCS is committed to both the success of the company and their employees'. This workshop was a great way to help ensure both. CMCS employees learned a great deal and are ready to practice what they have learned and are eager to participate in a follow up workshop this fall.
