Diners can curl up by the fire of this repurposed farm to en- joy Michelin-starred French cuisine. Vis- iting Lu xembourg 's old castles, chateaus and fortresses is also a necessity. The most famous is the restored Vianden nea r the German border, blue-roofed and complete with story book spires. Visitors can hike or drive the Eisch River Valley, also referred to as the " Valley of the Seven Castles," to see several at a time; the 37-kilometer (23-mile) trail reaches across more than half the coun- try. For the active, Luxembourg encourages sport, with more than 600 kilometers (373 miles) of cycling routes. Day-trips to any of the surrounding coun- tries are simple by train — it takes only one hour to get to Trier, Germany; t wo hours to Paris and three to Brussels. The nearby Orval Abbey, located on the border of France a nd Belg ium, is a n hour 's drive. There, I quickly polish off a block of delicious cheese made by the Trappist Cistercian monks, who also brew their own beer. Guests can stay at the abbey for two to seven days, invited by the monks to participate in silent meals and community prayer for a relaxing trip. W hen I visit Luxembourg, I'm not rush- ing f rom la ndma rk to la ndma rk , feeling stressed about the tourist spots I need to cross of f my list.
