November / December 2014 26 Time to Show Off Your Shine OCTOBERFEST Early Sunday morning, I got to the Hawthorne Plaza parking lot along with T Jones to start setting up for our annual Oktoberfest Car Show. The event is hosted by the Kansas City Mercedes Benz car club who invited all German car clubs to attend. This year the BMW car club offered a new trophy in competition with all the clubs attending the event. The trophy is called the "Traveling PIG", why? Because it goes to the car club who hogs up the most parking spaces and we wanted this trophy for the Porsche club. With dark sky weather threatening, we proceeded to set up for the event hoping the cloudy and misty weather would not ruin our day. Then we heard what sounded like thunder breaking the silence of the morning, was it a storm coming? No, it was the sweet roar of Porsche engines in the distance! Then they came, Porsche after Porsche started showing up all waxed and shined. For over an hour they kept coming in, keeping Murray Steeble and Tim Bubniak busy placing them into their designated parking spaces. After all the dust had settled, we had 44 beautiful pieces of art parked, filling every space available and then some. The Porsche club had taken the "PIG" almost doubling the other club's numbers!!!! The event was a great success with almost 100 German cars total filling the US Bank's parking lot. This year in addition to adding 3 more categories to the competition we added a "Best in Show" trophy to the event. This trophy is for the best of the best, with 90 votes cast and only one winner. Steve Unterman & Ellen Murphy's classic 1965 red 356 cabriolet clearly won the competition! However there were 2 other cars that received a large number of votes and I would like to acknowledge them as well. Christopher Fourie's 997 GT3RS came in second with David Stadtmueller's 991 Targa coming in third. We also had nine categories of competition in the shine and show event this year. We handed out 92 ballots to car show entries and PCA members and received almost 800 votes for the different classes. There were no entries for 914 class so the trophy was given to the second place winner in the mid engine class, Don Gustafson's 1999 Guards Red Boxster. So those of you with 914's, Panameras and Cayennes take note, you have a good chance of winning if you show up with your cars. After we finally got all the votes in and counted we were able to declare the winners. SOCIAL UPDATE By Spencer Cochran Photos by Kyle Yoder
