hether she's working on a ground-up project or established home, Julie Gardner of Gardner
& Associates follows her first client conversations with a structural analysis.
"I'm always trying to get a feel for the history and architecture of a house, and then I let that speak to
the design," she says.
The Carmel native also collects ideas on her hiking and beach outings, frequently snapping Instagram pho-
tos to document colors and textures. For 17 years, she's channeled those inspirations into significant Monterey
Peninsula homes and hotels including, most recently, Carmel's Cypress Inn.
This fall, Gardner took over the family design business from her mother, Jan, who worked on high-profile
projects at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Inn at Spanish Bay during 40 years at the helm.
"Being tutored by my mother was amazing…This was hands-on training for the last 17 years," Gardner
says. "I've learned from the best."
