September after losing their lease on Constance Wine Bar on Ocean Avenue. Behind the scenes, the open- ing saw its share of challenges. Co-owner and head chef Nico Izard found himself stuck in his native France with visa issues. Izard had to Skype instructions to sous chef James Anderson (formerly of La Bicyclette), while Smit and Salazar decorated the space despite a time and money crunch. None of this seems apparent now in this 49-seat charmer. Bathed in white walls, the space spor ts chic industrial black steel, reclaimed wood tables and geometric light fixtures—anchored by a baby grand piano. And the wine-friendly cuisine (new American food with French twists) has generated excitement, from simple buttermilk fried chicken to complex apple chut- ney-crusted Korobuta pork with spi- gariello (leaf broccoli).
