Per sonalized Communication Thrives at The Quill SHORTCUTS BUSINESS I n an age when text messages and Twitter posts often replace hand- written cards and letters, one Pacific Grove business knows that paper products and ar tful script still matter. The Quill, which star ted selling cards, stationery, paper goods and gifts in 1996, unveiled its new invitation studio this summer. It's now adjacent to the main Lighthouse Avenue store, and caters to consumers looking for personalized cards, unique invitations, hand-lettered calligraphy and other special presentation pieces. Owner Lisa Mefford covered the walls of the bright, modern studio space with stationery and samples that shoppers can customize accord- ing to their own needs. The mix includes monogrammed napkins, per- sonal letterhead, save-the-date cards, thank you notes, formal invitations and more, all attractively displayed. "We have a website, but we don't do e-commerce. We want people to come in and feel the paper and have that customer service experi- ence here in the store," she says. Mefford first opened The Quill after working in architecture and printing. Her original Grand Avenue location focused on invitations; within two years, she expanded into an adjacent space with room for more cards and gifts. Today, the store and studio carry paper goods by the likes of Crane & Co., Vera Wang, Kate Spade and Checkerboard, plus books, baby items, kitchen goods, candles and other gifts. The Quill serves many local customers, especially through the custom stationery and invitation business. Mefford also star ted welcoming an increasing number of out-of-town visitors after moving the main store from Grand to Lighthouse Avenue two years ago. She sees more 20- and 30-something shoppers stopping in to buy notecards and paper, as well. "Everyone loves to get something in the mail," says Mefford. "It's so rare, and it's just so special to receive anything handwritten, whether it's a card or a letter." The Quill is located at 553 Lighthouse Ave. in Pacific Grove.
