Local Couple Offer s Flower s and Juice Bar in Carmel I n the Carmel Crossroads Shopping Center, husband-and-wife team Christian Cumming and Lolo Orman run businesses inspired by the local surroundings and based on nature's bounty. Burst + Bloom is operated by Orman, and offers sophisticated flower arrangements that often include fruits, succulents and vegetables for wed- dings, businesses, homes and gifts. Burst + Bloom provided the florals for the recent Big Sur wedding of Sarah Simms and Kelly Hendrix, which was fea- tured in Martha Stewart Weddings. Orman says, "The bridesmaids' bouquets were created with loads of locally foraged bay laurel and heirloom kales, gathered with olive and rosemary we cut from the bride's Carmel Valley home. More of these olive branches and rosemary sprigs found their way into Sarah's custom headpiece—a wreath of young curly willow wound with herbs, garden roses, lace lichen, and, befitting a chef, local pink pepper- corns. Everything, from stem to stern, was personal. Each piece had a story, a legend, a myth; tales to be woven around a campfire." Good to Go, the more recent addition to the shopping center, has fresh pressed juices and smoothies, along with delicious sandwiches and other light eating options. The drinks are dairy free, and Cumming says, intended to serve people in a hurry who need something healthy to grab and go. "They taste great because we spent a lot of time balancing the ingredients," he says. "People can order custom blends as well." Orman notes her energy level has increased since enjoying such con- coctions as the Bugs Bunny, made with carrot, celery, ginger and mint, and The Beast, created with banana, basil, lemon, kale and spinach. Coconut water is used as a base for the smoothies. Whatever your pleasure, blooms and juices are sourced mainly from local suppliers. "We are targeting locals for both businesses," Cumming says.
