L
inda O'Brien, director of visual merchandise and design at Poppleton's, likens the store's delivery
days to the holiday season.
"It's kind of like Christmas," she says, describing the arrival of boxes filled with accessories and furnishings.
"You get all these great things, and you get to open them all up."
O'Brien takes those deliveries and creates stylish room and window displays throughout the 16,000-square-
foot Monterey store. She approaches each project without a plan, preferring instead to arrange colors, tex-
tures and pieces as she goes. The resulting rooms are richly layered and visually inviting.
"They inspire people and give them ideas," she says.
After 17 years, O'Brien has designed more rooms than she can count. She credits store owner Mike
Poppleton, her fellow designers and the store's delivery team for their role in her success.
"I like to stay in the background and focus on the creative aspects," she says.
