SHORTCUTS NEIGHBORS 64 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 4 Ensuring Quality Librar y Ser vices for Generations in Carmel T he village of Carmel-by-the-Sea has had a public library since 1906 (with a modest collection of 500 books) and the Carmel Public Library Foundation (CPLF) has been around since 1989 to support it. The popular library serves about 112,000 people each year. According to Library Foundation Executive Director Amy Donohue, the library has a unique and successful partnership with the City of Carmel and the Friends of Harrison Memorial Library (HML). "The Foundation and its Board of Directors [led by new President Ben Heinrich] engage the community in supporting the library, creating excite- ment for new programs and services," explains Donohue. The City pro- vides staff salaries and upkeep of the two library buildings (the Main Library built in 1927 and the Park branch in 1989) while the Foundation funds all materials, library programs and services through donor gifts, grants and sponsorships. The Friends of HML holds a popular summer Book Sale to further support library programs, and many local business- es support the Foundation's events. CPLF generates funds for the library primarily by organizing a series of interesting community programs all year, raising awareness of the library's lifelong learning opportunities. An upcoming lecture is "The Stanford Family Legacy" by Stanford University archivist Daniel Hartwig on Tuesday, November 11. The "Local History Talk" on Tuesday, December 9 will fea- ture "Films Made in Carmel," presented by Monterey Movie Tours guide Doug Lumsden. Both will be held at Sunset Center. "We are able to attract major authors and experts because Carmel is a very attractive place to visit," says Donohue, "and they are enthusiastic about supporting libraries." A major fundraising event is being planned for next spring, to include a panel of best-selling non-fiction authors. Past "Meet the Author" lecturers have included Jeffrey Deaver, Elizabeth George, Rick Reilly and Jane Smiley.
