W hen Raheem Kareem began his human resources internship at Penske Automotive Group last summer, he wasn't sure what to expect. "I knew I would be given a lot to do, but I was surprised at how deeply I was immersed in the company's work," Kareem said. "I've been exposed to lots of areas of focus and feel like I'm able to branch out into other parts of the business operation." Initially assigned to a new subsidiary development team, Kareem was thrilled to be treated as a professional with ideas to off er. He became profi cient in employee screening, hiring and training before moving to the Penske corporate offi ce, where he performed data and analytical functions under top HR executives. "I've been able to support and learn about the accounting and marketing functions in ways that have really sparked my interest in those fi elds," Kareem said. He said his investment in Penske was a direct response to their investment in him. "They listened to my ideas and let me show I was capable of doing meaningful work. As a result, I believe I added value to their team this summer. My resume will show something unique — something a hundred other resumes won't."
