UComm 9080-21,250 A ll of the programs in The Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions share a mission to develop professionals who improve health and quality of life through practice, leadership, education, discovery and service. Carrying out this mission requires engagement with many diff erent people. Partnering is an essential strategy for us to carry out our mission. The faculty, staff and students in our programs have taken the need to partner very seriously. I want to share some highlights of these eff orts. These partnerships improve the health and quality of life of people in central and northern Michigan and beyond. They also help us develop professionals through practice, leadership, education, discovery and service. Mobile Health Central (see Page 4) is an important vehicle (pun intended) for us to reach into communities. This gives us the opportunity to provide critical services to the citizens of central and northern Michigan while providing valuable training and exposure to our communities for our students. Mobile Health Central also helps us refer community members to their local health care systems to get additional care they may need. Partnering with other universities is also essential. We worked together with Michigan Technological University to create a cohort of physical therapy students in the Upper Peninsula (see Page 11). And we've collaborated with Ferris State University and Saginaw Valley State University to develop interprofessional education and practice opportunities in our region. This partnership will allow us to work with area health care entities to prepare our students for the team-based health care system of the future. Our students also engage in partnering for their own education benefi t as well as the benefi t of communities. For example, our Health Professions Residential College students engaged in more than 9,000 hours of community service last year. That is the equivalent of 22½ people working full time for the benefi t of people in our communities! Our partnering eff orts are ever evolving. We have, and will continue to, partner with K-12 schools, service organizations and our alumni in the workforce. So, please enjoy this issue of the Pulse and contact us if you have an idea for a meaningful partnership. dean's column Get LinkedIn The Herbert H. & Grace A.
