Cold Therapy Gets a Warm Reception in Carmel SHORTCUTS BUSINESS 64 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 B rittney Scarlett-Torres and brother Skyler Scarlett recently opened what may be one of the more unusual businesses in Carmel. Glacé Cryotherapy puts clients into a deep freeze for three minutes or less, promising benefits ranging from pain relief, a boost in athletic perform- ance, heightened metabolism, improved mood and energy levels, stress relief and toxin reduction, decreased inflammation, reduced muscle sore- ness from activity, and improved skin, hair and nails. "I was a little skeptical at first," Skyler, an exercise physiologist, admits. "But I looked into it and saw that Olympic ath- letes, the NFL, the NBA, pro golfers and physi- cal therapists were swearing by it. I looked at the science of it and read tons of research papers. The first time I ever did it, I loved it. I had a boost of energy and played the best tennis I've ever played." Located in the Barnyard, the whole body cryotherapy spa is the only one in Central California, and is based on a treatment invented in the 1970s by a Japanese doctor to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Clients immerse themselves in a tank with extremely cold, dry air, for up to three minutes, and while their core temperature stays the same, their skin temperature decreases, causing the body to move blood from the extremities to the core of the body. After the treatment, oxygenated blood circulates through the body, increasing self-healing properties, and possibly burning up to 500-800 kcals. There are some clients who should not participate, includ- ing pregnant women, those with very high blood pressure or heart issues. Those without limita- tions can come up to twice a day. "A lot of people get a euphoric feeling," Brittney explains. "About 90 percent of people get what we call a 'cryo rush.' One guy in his 60s said, 'I feel like I'm 24 years old!' People leave here with a smile." Glacé Cryotherapy is located at 3652 The Barnyard, Suite I-14 in Carmel.
