A Clear Eye on the Future L ife can change in the blink of an eye—something that has multiple meanings for Trevor Fogg of Blink Optometry in Carmel. Ten years ago, Dr. Fogg's life journey became a little easier. In this era when advanced degrees often come with the burden of daunting debt, a helping hand was offered for his education at the College of Optometry at UC Berkeley. Fogg received the Willis W. and Ethel M. Clark Foundation's Investment in Community Fellowship, an annual award that provides financial support for graduate school or medical school for a student who has strong ties to the Monterey Peninsula and who intends to return to the area to be of service to the community. "It's more than a scholarship—it's an effor t of community love, a way to feed our local brain trust," explains June Duran Stock. Stock is a mem- ber of the Foundation's Board of Directors and the daughter of Ethel and Willis Clark, education pioneers who founded the Monterey-based educational publishing company CTB/McGraw-Hill. The foundation's investments plant seeds to be harvested back on the Peninsula. With Fogg's deep roots in the community, the Carmel native returned to his home to begin his practice. The Clark Foundation began awarding the fellowships in 2002. The recipients are diverse—interested in elementary and adult education, law, public policy, veterinary medicine, dentistry, nursing, educational video game development, photography, bio- chemical research, community arts, and orthopedic surgery. Although the fellows' paths differ, they have a common mission. Like Dr. Fogg, they are committed to community service, and they treasure the Monterey Peninsula—its past, present, and future. That's vision of the best kind. Information about The Clark Foundation (including how to apply for a fel- lowship) can be found at www.theclarkfoundation.org. Blink Optometry is locat- ed at 217 Crossroads Blvd in Carmel. 831/250-6999 or www.blinkcarmel.com. —Meredith Mullins SHORTCUTS GIVING BACK 86 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 Carmel native Dr. Trevor Fogg opened his Blink Optometry Carmel clinic almost two years ago.
