EUROPE AND AFRICA: COMMERCE,
CHRISTIANITY, CIVILIZATION, AND
CONQUEST
The Europe and Africa: Commerce, Christianity, Civilization,
and Conquest collection presents a dramatic, gripping
chronicle of exploration and missions from the early nineteenth
century through the Conference of Berlin in 1884 and the
subsequent scramble for Africa. Unique sources provide a
wealth of research topics on explorers, politicians, evangelists,
journalists, and tycoons blinded by romantic nationalism or
caught up in the scramble for markets and converts. In addition,
these monographs, manuscripts, and newspapers cover key
issues of economics, world politics, and international strategy.

Theodore Dwight Weld wrote in his book, American slavery as it is: testimony of a thousand witnesses,
that a slave woman was only given about four weeks after birth before she was expected to return
to work in the fields. Her newborn was then either watched by a young child or left by a tree
between feedings.
