March / April 2015 13 "Since taking over as the Editor for the Der Sportwagen a year or so ago, Stan Thorne has written several wonder- ful pieces about his love af- fair with the Porsche marque. These are wonderful articles, mainly about going to break- fast, expressing deep emotion in the most loquacious terms imaginable. As much as I like Stan, these stories are so sweet that I fear I'm becoming diabetic. Now, MY Saturday morning routine is a tad different. First off, my car care routine is, shall we say, lacking. My Meridian Silver 2001 Boxster S hides dirt very well and so is the perfect car for me. Heck, until a cou- ple of years ago, I thought a microfiber was a small dietary supplement.. I affectionately call her Inga. (so named for her Swed- ish birth and Teri Garr's char- acter in Young Frankenstein) Inga has a few miles on her and it shows. Over 116,000 at last glance. I've put over 40,000 miles on her since I bought her from a friend of mine seven years ago. And, while that may not seem re- markable, you should know that I was out of the country for two years and spent 3 of the remaining ones either working from home or flying to DC on a weekly basis. So, she has earned every one of her blemishes. While Inga will never win a concours event or people's choice award, she certainly is my favorite. So, no, I don't get lost in my reflection and I don't have a borderline re- ligious experience when I get in. Instead, I give her a swat on the tail, get in, drop the top if it's over 50, and drive away grinning like an idiot. As far as breakfast goes, I started attending about 2 years after joining the PCA. I still kick myself for not go- ing sooner. It took me a few weeks to settle in, but what still amazes me is the fact that we have such a diverse group that gets along so well. There are people that race; there are those that are too intense about cleaning their car (for my taste, at least); there are those that are into Formula One or the Tudor endurance events; and there are those who just show up for a good time. I distinctly remember one breakfast where we discussed why the Pope didn't grant Henry VIII an annulment, the difference between Sunnis and Shiites, and the impact of "Beecher's Bibles" on territorial Kansas. Quite a heady 30 minutes or so. Granted, most Saturdays aren't so cerebral, but the potential is there. And so is the potential to find someone you have a lot in common with. Or not. We've been getting 30 to 35 folks lately at break- fast, and there's still plenty of room. So jump in your car and come on down. Don't worry if it's clean or not. Don't worry if you don't have any Porsche attire. And don't worry if you can't tell a 930 from a 991. I still can't. Just come out and enjoy. You'll have a decent meal and have a great time. You might even learn something." - JIM And Now For Something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT By Jim Cummings
